Albemarle Charlottesville Historical SocietyFounded in 1940, the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society seeks to study, preserve and promote the history of Charlottesville and Albemarle County, Virginia. The Society strives to accomplish this mission through a variety of public programs, including exhibits, publications, lectures, walking tours, oral history interviews and various educational programs.
The Society's research library, the Charlottesville-Albemarle Historical Collection, contains over 2,000 books and bound periodicals, as well as photographs, manuscripts, maps, pamphlets, newspapers and vertical files relating to the history of our community.
The Society's museum collection contains over 1,500 artifacts of historical significance to Charlottesville and Albemarle County.
The Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society is located in the historic McIntire Building in downtown Charlottesville. The McIntire Building was completed in 1921 and donated to the City of Charlottesville as the city's first municipal library by local civic benefactor Paul Goodloe McIntire.
